Dealer-
Goodness what a life and adventure this boy has had so far. Dealer was the pick boy out of the litter and I gave him to my friend MJ. MJ was older and I will never forget her saying "Why would you give an old lady a puppy?" I replied "Well I hope when I am 70 someone would give me a puppy" She laughed and replied "I hope I live another 50 years so I can do that for you" Mj was such a great lady. We made arrangements that if anything happened to MJ I would come get Dealer.
Dealer lived with MJ for the first 2 years of his life. Constantly escaping her yard, stealing lunchmeat off the counters and just being a typical naughty field spaniel. Even though he was extremely naughty MJ absolutely adored him and his antics. One day however I got a call from MJ's cousins that MJ had suffered a stroke. Could I please come get Dealer? Without hesitation I arranged to pick Dealer up. MJ was at the hospital and needed rehab. My first question was "do you want me to hold on to him? Or try finding him a home?" They spoke with MJ who felt it was best that I found Dealer a home.
I started with doing health checks and Dealer was passing everything with flying colors UNTIL we got to his heart check. It didn't go well and Dealer was diagnosis with a heart condition called DCM.
Dilated cardiomyopathy affects the heart's ventricles and atria, the lower and upper chambers of the heart. This disease will shorten a dog's life. I was shocked and the cardiologist said there is a chance it is caused by nutrition. If it was nutritionally based it would reverse but it would take time. I had already lined up a home for Dealer and explained the issue to the potential owners. That there was a chance it may not reverse. His new owners discussed it and said "well everyone else here has health issues so he will fit right in." With that Dealer headed home.
Covid then came along and we were unable to recheck his heart till a year later. We are happy to report his condition had completely reversed. His heart was now normal! We were all very relieved by this news.
Dealer has been working hard and earning titles like crazy. He is still a big goofy boy that can be a little stubborn at times but that's ok his owners love him all the same. I am sure MJ is watching him from above with a smile or a head shake at his antics.
