The One Dog That Does It All
We believe that the show and working dogs should all be one dog. Sporting dogs have always been working dogs however some breeds have become split into "show lines" and "working lines". The Field Spaniel thankfully has not succumbed to this and we work hard to maintain not only dogs that adhere to the breed standard but dogs that can still work and do performance activities.
Not all dogs are created equal. When looking for a show/performance dog you need a dog with confidence and enthusiasm. Here at Killara we are picky about the dogs we place in performance/show homes as we want our owners not only to have a confident dog but one that enjoys the dog sports as much as they do! Our fields participate in: Agility, Barn Hunt, Obedience, Hunting, Dock Diving, Rally Obedience, Tracking, Nose Work and Lure coursing.
AKC Recognized Performance Venues For Field Spaniels:
Agility: In agility, a dog and handler navigate an obstacle course as they race against the clock. In every trial the judge will lay out the obstacles in a different sequence, and the handler must decide how to run the course cleanly and efficiently. Typical courses include tunnels, jumps, an A-frame, weave poles, and a seesaw.
Barn Hunt: Barn Hunt is the new and quickly growing dog sport catching fire across the country! Barn Hunt is based on the traditional roles of many breeds in ridding farms, barns, crop storage areas, and homes of destructive vermin. Some breeds were specifically created to fill this role, and for many of those breeds, Barn Hunt provides their first true opportunity for responsible breeders to test proper working traits in their dogs. Barn Hunt is also open to any dog of any breed or mix who wishes to play the game and can fit through an 18" wide by bale-height tall tunnel. Barn Hunt has titles, levels of increasing difficulty, and championships. Barn Hunt is an independent sport, but titles are recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).
Obedience: Obedience trials showcase dogs that have been trained and conditioned to behave well at home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs. AKC Obedience trials allow exhibitors and their dogs to enjoy companionship and competition as they proudly earn AKC titles.
Hunting: Hunting tests are designed to evaluate the abilities of various types of dogs by testing them against a standard. Dogs are tested at various levels and when the requirements of a level are met, the dog will be awarded an AKC title. In the case of the sporting breeds, these titles would be the Junior Hunter (JH), Senior Hunter (SH) and Master Hunter (MH).
Dock Diving: Dock Diving is a competition where dogs jump off a dock and the distance is measured. AKC now recognize titles earned from the North American Diving Dogs. To earn titles at various levels the dog has to complete 5 jumps at the require distance. AKC will recognize titles earned from NADD. Its a fun sport that the entire family can enjoy!
Rally Obedience: In AKC Rally, a dog-and-handler team negotiate a course of exercises according to sequentially numbered signs. The team works at its own pace, with the dog heeling from sign to sign. Each sign contains a pictograph that illustrates the particular exercise. Judges choose from 50 signs to design courses unique to each trial. Novice exercises are performed on a leash. The Advanced and Excellent classes are done off leash. The handler may use signals, verbal encouragement, and body language to urge their dog through the course. Rally is less strict than Obedience and is a great place for novice teams to start out!
Scent Work: AKC Scent Work is a sport that mimics the task of working detection dogs to locate a scent and communicate to the handler that the scent has been found. Scent Work is a positive, challenging activity that allows dogs the opportunity to use their strongest natural sense in a way that is fun, engaging, and that builds and strengthens a foundation of trust between the handler and dog.
Lure Coursing: The Coursing Ability Test (CAT) is based on the sport of lure coursing, in which sighthound breeds test their instinct for high-speed pursuit by chasing a plastic lure over a course of straight-aways and turns. Unlike the hound-specific realm of lure coursing, CAT is open to all breeds and mixed-breeds.
