Keiki
So, it started with I wanted to breed Maiko one last time as she had only had one litter of 9 and after that she was very busy with her show career. After finishing 2018 as the number one Field Spaniel in the country we brought her home to have one more litter.
As we neared the end of her pregnancy, I knew we weren't going to have a big litter. Sure enough, xrays showed a single pup. We waited for Maiko to go into labor but when her due date came and went and no signs of labor we opted for a C-section and lil Keiki entered the world.
With being a singleton, Keiki was spoiled from the get-go. Mom Maiko and big sister Tahiti both took care of her. It was rather amusing watching the girls kindly battling it out over who got to take care of the baby girl. As Keiki grew, I kept debating on if she was to stay or go. She was very little, her structure wasn't a wow, and she wasn't quite up to snuff on what I typically keep. HOWEVER, her big attitude really made up for everything else. Upon informing my youngest son that she was staying he immediately got out all the training equipment and started training HIS dog. The two have been inseparable ever since and to be honest Keiki is really the perfect dog for him!
About the name: As Maiko had a Japanese name, I wanted a name to reflect that. After months of searching, I found the Hawaiian name Keiki. Keiki is Hawaiian for "baby" or "child", literally "the little one". I don't think I could of found a better name to suit our little singleton!
