Paige came home with me in December of 2003 after a two year wait to get the right field spaniel. I had high hopes of having not only a show dog, but one that was also capable of earning performance titles. Little did I know that little brown ball of perpetual sunshine would grow up to be everything I hoped for! Her show career started off with a bang by earning reserve winners bitch (5 pt major) at the FSSA national specialty trailer show. Being the youngest girl in the ring at only 6 months 2 days old, this was a huge win against some very tough competition. Paige earned her championship easily at just over 1 1/2 years old, with 2 BOB wins over specials, garnering 3 majors along the way. Her next time out as a special Paige went BOS at Waukesha 2005 supported entry.
During her time in the show ring, Paige was also busy working on her performance skills. She had been in training for tracking and obedience since 8 weeks old. On October 17, 2004 the hard work began to pay off when Paige earned her TD on her first attempt. Six months later to the day, at 1 1/2 years old, Paige made history by becoming the first field spaniel bitch (and youngest field ever) to earn the TDX. This was just the start of an exciting performance career. Paige went on to earn the Rally Novice, Rally Advanced and Companion dog title earning multiple placements. In the fall of 2006 Paige and I made our official debut in the field. Paige qualified in 4/5 hunting events and earned her Junior Hunt title in 4 weeks. I was extremely proud of her as she is my first dog I have ever trained in hunting and she made it so much fun!
In the fall of 2010 Paige and I made our first attempts at the Master Hunt level, and I was not disappointed. She earned 3 MH legs at 2 separate hunt tests. I was very proud of her ability to take direction at a distance and the judges were very impressed by her marking and retrieving abilities. As we had a litter of puppies in the spring of 2011 we were unable to prepare for the spring hunt season. In the fall in 2011 we were able to earn another Master Hunt leg. Paige almost earned her last leg as well - but unfortunately we had a bad call out in the field.
The 2012 hunt test season found me with an 8 year old girl that was getting winded in the field. So it was decided we all needed some conditioning. I swear the first time I took Paige out for bike run she looked at me like I was crazy- after the first half of mile she was done- We remained diligent in our exercise routine and soon Paige was comfortable with going for over a mile at a continuous trot! This conditioning carried over to the field as I now had a girl that wasn't getting winded after the first bird.
In April of 2012 we made the trek out to Pennsylvania for their spring hunt test and Paige was spot on. She did everything she was trained to do and did one of her best performances ever. I will forever remember her final water retrieve to hand that completed the final leg of her Master Hunt title. I can now proudly brag that my girl Paige is a Master Hunt dog. There were many mistakes made by me in her early training that we had to over-come. Through diligent training and the talented instructions of my trainer Hal, we were able to over-come those issues and achieve our goal! Paige will continue to run in hunt tests as that will always be her first love in life....and I will always cherish every single run that we have together.
In 2013 we decided to enter Paige for fun in the 2013 National Specialty. I had one condition for my husband and it was that HE had to show her. Jay had never been in the show ring before but he was excited about being able to "run his old girl around the ring for fun". I told him it was simple and just to follow the person in front of him. Well imagine his surprise when the judge pulled him and Paige out of the line up! The look on Jay's face was priceless! Jay ended up with a Judge's Award of Merit at a National specialty!
Honestly that day was what it is all about- having fun adventures with your dog and making wonderful memories!
Paige is now retired and accompanies my husband Jay to work everyday. She is still the apple of our eyes and we still cherish every moment with her!
We said our final good bye to Paige on September 20. 2019. To say we are heartbroken is an understatement. Paige was with me for over 15 very long years. The house is very empty without her. I look back at her accomplishments and I can remember each and everyone of our adventures. People think I list things so I can brag when in all honesty I list things so I can remember the wonderful times I have with my dogs.
Dear Paige. I miss you so very much. I miss running you in the fields at hunt tests. I miss you wandering into the kitchen as I cook looking for handouts. I miss that laughing face you always gave me. I just miss you. Thank you for that final good bye, letting me know you were ok and that I made the right choice. I know you don't hurt anymore, I know you are ok now. I won't be ok for a long while...I'll get there one day. But I am still not there. You meant the world to me and I am thankful for everyday I got to call you mine. Rest easy. I love you Paiger.
